Chương trình hiến máu mang tên "Quà Tết"
Vào tháng Giêng hàng năm, bạn bè và đồng nghiệp thường hỏi tôi dự định làm gì trong dịp Tết. Năm nay, tôi hiến máu và tôi hy vọng rằng bạn cũng sẽ làm như vậy.

Trong chuyến thăm các cơ sở của VHHTMTƯ, tôi đã hân hạnh gặp và nói chuyện với Thứ trưởng Bộ Y tế Giáo sư Nguyễn Thị Xuyên và Giám đốc VHHTMTƯ Giáo sư Nguyễn Anh Trí. Cả hai đều khẳng định lại vai trò tối quan trọng của những người hiến máu đối với việc cứu mạng sống và khắc phục tình trạng Hà Nội bị thiếu nguồn cung máu trong dịp Tết. Giáo sư Trí nhấn mạnh rằng những người hiến máu tham gia “Ngày hội Hiến máu Xuân Hồng” 2013 của VHHTMTƯ - được tổ chức hàng năm sau Tết để bổ sung vào lượng máu dự trữ đã bị giảm bớt - là điều cần thiết. Trong những năm qua, ngày hội này đã mang lại hơn 7.500 đơn vị máu trong một ngày. Tôi hy vọng ngày hội năm nay - diễn ra ngày 3/3 - sẽ đạt được cao hơn con số đó.

Donating Blood for Tet
Every January, friends and colleagues ask about my plans for Tet. This year, I’m donating blood, and I hope that you will, too.

Yesterday I donated blood at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion (NIHBT) to raise awareness of the critical blood shortages that Vietnamese blood banks experience during Tet due to increased traffic accidents and other emergency cases. I also wanted my donation to encourage everyone at the U.S. Embassy to take twenty minutes out of their day and participate in the U.S. Embassy Hanoi “Tet Gift” Blood Drive on Friday,
January 11.
Our “Tet Gift” Blood Drive will mark the U.S. Embassy’s second blood drive conducted in cooperation with NIHBT. The Embassy and NIHBT previously partnered for our Inaugural Blood Drive on September 7, 2012, when 65 Embassy staff members and I donated blood with NIHBT's assistance.

While touring the NIHBT facilities, I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Deputy Minister of Health Professor Nguyen Thi Xuyen and NIHBT Director Professor Nguyen Anh Tri. They both reiterated the vital role blood donors play in saving lives and overcoming Hanoi’s blood supply shortage around Tet. Professor Tri highlighted the need for donors to participate in NIHBT's 2013 "Xuan Hong Blood Donation Festival” held annually after Tet to replenish diminished supplies. In past years, this festival resulted in over 7,500 blood units in one day. I hope this year’s festival on March 3 will exceed that number.

I think Amb Shear is doing the right thing. Blood donations and blood drives are common in the US and serve a very valuable community service. It costs nothing but 20 minutes of your time and could save a life. It is a single act of selflessness that can bring happiness to family and friends of someone you will never meet. Though his act is publicized here on his page, the recipient will likely never know who saved his or her life. As far as your comment about human rights, Tu Quyen, I think it all begins with caring for those whom we have never met. Please don't denigrate this altruistic act.
DeleteTu Quyen, though Amb. Shear has publicized the blood drive on his blog, I think it is safe to say the person who receives his blood will never know from who he or she received it. Blood drives and donations are common in the US and are one of the few community services you can participate in that will likely save someone's life. This is a grass roots action, a baby step, in the human rights effort that you speak of. Truly altruistic actions like blood donations make this world a better place for the giver and the receiver. To give a gift so precious to someone as life itself with no intention of receiving anything in return other than the joy of giving is a marvelous thing. Please troll somewhere else.

The Embassy raised awareness on our Facebook page, but if you didn't hear about it or have the opportunity to join, please visit NIHBT this spring to help replenish the blood supply. We all have a part to play to ensure local hospitals have enough blood to save the lives of those in need.
